Faraday's Electric Motor

Using his own experiments and discoveries Faraday tried to make some practical use of his new found knowledge. He proceeded to create the worlds first electric motor. He used two glass jars filled with mercury, magnets, wires and a battery to create a device with parts that moved when current was passed through the system. He used the interaction between a fixed magnet and a movable wire to spin the wire around the magnet in one of the jars. In the other jar he used a fixed wire and a movable magnet to spin the magnet around the wire. The mercury was used to provide an electrical connection that allowed the parts to move freely. Can you determine how this motor worked by viewing the animation? Which of Maxwell's laws can you see in use?
